Final Event Outcomes

On December 14th, 2011, the Final Event and second 2BESAFE User Forum took place at the Cité Internationale Universitaire in Paris.

Around 80 people attended at this event, stakeholders affiliated to road users associations as well as road safety authorities, OEMs, public authorities, research institutes.

The Forum was introduced by Stéphane Espié (IFSTTAR), 2BESAFE’s scientific manager, who explained the rationale of the project.

John Golias and George Yannis (NTUA) illustrated the Power Two Wheeler critical risk factors, focusing on behaviour, infrastructure and weather.

Then Niccolò Baldanzini (UNIFI) presented the first Naturalistic Riding Study ever done in Europe, under the light of the lessons learnt from this study, as well as providing results.

Afterwards, three studies delving into risk awareness in PTW riders have been illustrated: PTW riders' attitudes towards risk and safety (Villy Portouli – ICCS), Investigation of motorcyclists' abilities in Risk Awareness (Thierry Bellet – IFSTTAR) and the last one concerned Riders’ acceptance of assistive technologies (Michael Lenné – MUARC).

The second part of the Forum hosted the presentation of a set of studies concerning PTWs conspicuity, given by Lars Rössger (TUD).

Finally, Martin Winkelbauer from KFV illustrated the 2BESAFE proposals for safety countermeasures.

After the presentation of the project outcomes, participants had the chance to attend at a round table session - moderated by Stéphane Espié - with invited speakers: Maria-Cristina Marolda, Policy Officer at EC, explained the European Commission’s point of view about the research in PTW safety. Aline Delhaye from FEMA brought the user perspective on 2BESAFE outcomes. A final, fruitful discussion involving project partners as well as stakeholders was the final confirmation that 2BESAFE project succeeded in raising the attention on research topics that has now been uncovered, thus paving the way for future research.
